As Ciel was heading back towards the tavern, he felt himself suddenly yanked in the opposite way. He should have known that it was Tacere's doing, and he was about to rip him a new one about it, but Tacere beat Ciel to the verbal punch. Ciel frowned in frustration. Tacere had brought up some valid points. And when Tacere was right it only frustrated Ciel. The fact that Tacere could do it in such a calm manner only annoyed Ciel further. Ciel sat quietly in their spot in that marketplace, thinking. People passing to and fro like nothing was wrong. Ciel was envious of them, since suddenly everything in his life was becoming/going wrong, one thing after another, like a demented domino effect. Yet another domino in that chain was Vendisa; both the mere mention of her and the prospect of possibly having to resort to going to her for aid. Ciel briefly sent a glare from his left eye to Tacere when he mentioned Vendisa's name. But for what seemed like the longest time Ciel offered no reply. Instead he sat quietly and thought about things. Why was Ciel suddenly so quiet as opposed to his loud obnoxious self? On the one hand the boy had so much to ponder over. Reason two was the pain Ciel was in, the constant pain spreading through him from under the eyepatch and within his right eye. The pain was sapping the strength away from Ciel's anger, at least for the moment anyway. The pain, and what was happening with his curse; two more domino's in the chain.
Ciel placed his hands on the sides of his head. What did all this thinking amount to? Something profound?, nope Ciel isnt that lucky. "What the fuck!!?" Ciel thought out loud. "You said it yourself, going back to the tavern is either a trap or bait. Either way its the end of the line if we go back there. So we run? Fucking where to?! I had a falling out with the pirates when I was real young, they only tolerated me since and came by to visit me once in awhile because I could heal their injured, but I cant even do that anymore. They have no use or nothing to gain from bothering with me anymore, so thats a dead end. You'd think I'd have plenty of friends here on Kritt, but all the people on this island are assholes, dicks, and dipshits who cant stand the sight of me. I have no idea why since I'm so nice, but still its not an option...." Ciel was saying. Technically Ciel's grateing personality was enough to give anyone plenty of justified reason to dislike him, like for example the denizens of Kritt, but Ciel was never gonna put that together in his head. "Would Vendisa help us, possibly. If you can find her, but I aint fucking looking because I had an even worse falling out with her and i cant friggen stand the bitch. So that aint gonna happen either. And its not like we can reason with these people after us, because we dont know a fucking thing about them. You think i'd have some family to go to in this sort of situation but nope, almost all my family is dead. The only relatives i have are my twin-sister and my cousin, and thats it, and I have no idea where either of them are at the moment. So what the fuck is there for me to do anymore and where the fuck is there for me to go!!!?" Ciel was saying. He had been talking in a tone of voice that was partly crazed and partly depressed. And in the middle of all that, blood had started pouring down his cheek from under his eye patch. "The writing is on the wall Tacere, its the end of my shitty life for me. I think you should just go back to wondering around or whatever the hell you did before you met me, and meanwhile i'll just go back to the tavern to meet my maker" Ciel suggested.
The people in the market place continued to go about their bizness, even those who were passing by in proximity and could hear the things Ciel was saying, offered no support or even a shred of pity and kept on going in a rather callous manner. Except for one person. This one boy walked right up to the two of them, seemingly looking concerned. But Tacere and Ciel would possibly realize that this boy was someone they had both encounted once before. "Hello again" Genis said.

Sharp ashen eyes carefully studying the other's expression, Tacere waited for the boy to speak, his brow furrowing lightly with the strange silence that was his only response. The lively chatter of the marketplace was deafening compared to the boy's silence. A little girl with brown hair tied up in pigtails chattered rapidly about her new ragdoll, a man with a gruff voice spoke quietly of rumors from overseas, a merchant was calling out to passing people luring them to his cheap wares, and above this din, the high keening wail of a baby with an inexperienced mother. This ruckus didn't distract the daemon, but it did quickly become tiresome. The taller of the two watched as Ciel almost enviously eyed those who walked past. Looking back at the boy, he was surprised to see a sharp glare connect with his own gaze for an instant. "Ciel...." He murmured, his voice low with warning. He didn't take too kindly to being glared at in such a manner. When the bluenette clutched the sides of his head, Tacere became more concerned, dropping to one knee in order to maintain a more equal eye level with him, and gently tilted the boy's head up to get a better look at him, a hint of concern flashed in his eyes. Was it the pain? He blinked, startled when Ciel shouted profanity rather angrily, and listened at the outpouring of anger that flowed from the younger male's mouth. "You can't heal yourself either... It stole your healing powers." Resisting the urge to wince, knowing that more likely than not, the white haired man would be subject to something along the lines of 'Thank you Captain F_cking Obvious!' from Ciel. Waiting for the smaller to cease the outpouring anger, the ash daemon was startled to see blood start to trickle down the eyepatch, rolling down his cheek like thick crimson tears. Without thinking, Tacere began wiping away the bloody tears with a thin cloth, another clean scrap from the assortment of items he held. He stopped for a moment and gave a sharp glare to Ciel, "What kind of simpering prattle is this? This isn't how you are, you're a sharp tongued child. Not this pitiful waif who wants to die." With a less admonishing look, he carelessly lifted Ciel's eyepatch to wipe up the remaining blood. Muttering quietly under his breath, the male was surprised and awestruck by the luminous eye that greeted him. "Beautiful..." He whispered, suddenly filled with both an anger and a longing that didn't belong to him. Once he covered the eye with the cloth however, the anger was gone, and only a distant trace of the longing remained. Replacing Ciel's eyepatch, he attempted to run his hands over his hair, realize that he was wearing a cap, and proceeded to fix the way it sat upon his head instead. "Cie-..." He stopped, before slowly turning around to the voice. He knew this voice. It was that brat. The one who had put some trickery upon the boy earlier. Tacere rose to his full height, ashed eyes glaring sharply, "Why hello." He watched Genis carefully, even going so far as to pick up Ciel and shift him to a more defensive location on the bench, "Don't think I've forgotten you. You were the boy who... The one who fell down and ran after seeing this boy." He pretended to ponder, but in actuality, he had barely caught himself, making sure he didn't mention too much about himself. Without his swirling white robes, the hood that was now pulled up over his face and the cap obscured his white hair and facial features, leaving only his neck and eyes unshadowed. Familiar, yet different enough, for the daemon had only given the briefest of glances to Genis, "What do you want boy.." He spat the word boy out sharply, keeping an eye on the boy's hands, before flicking his gaze back into the teen's eyes. "Well?" He put one hand protectively on Ciel's capped head, the other resting under his cloak, sitting comfortably on the hilt of a dagger. (One he filched earlier from the market....)

"Friggen Damn it. What does it take to get you to take a hint and get lost. Was your life really so utterly dull and boring without me, and deep down inside you're really more pathetic and douche-y than I could possibly imagine? Or is the prospect of prolonging my suffering and sticking around long enough to watch my life wither into a fucking stinking turd fucking amusing to you. And yea thanks for rubbing it in my face how i've become so much of a useless sod that i cant even friggin heal my fucking self. Your so motherfucking welcome." Ciel ranted. Perhaps that slight rant was a sign of Ciel's pain subsiding somewhat. Perhaps... Though in the middle of that rant Tacere had taken it upon himself to start wiping away the blood pouring down Ciel's cheek. "What the Fuck!! What are you doing, I told you to go away asshole, and in response your wiping my cheek.... Blood?" Ciel only noticed the blood on Tacere's cloth now. "Its my blood...." Ciel said in a somewhat quiter voice. As Ciel reached up towards his eyepatch, Tacere had beat him to the punch and lifted the eyepatch himself. "No!" Ciel said urgently and suddenly as his left eye widened, at the moment Tacere went to lift the eye patch. But it was too late and the deed was done. "Oh no...." Ciel whispered, as he watched the personality change occur. He could see it briefly in both Tacere's demeanor and the look in Tacere's eyes. Thoughts about how he was going to get as far away from Tacere as possible quickly flooded and raced through Ciel's mind. But then Tacere proclaimed Ciel's cursed eye to be 'beautiful' and placed Ciel's eyepatch back on. And afterword Tacere's demeanor seemed to shift back to his normal self. "What...." Ciel mouthed the word but no sound came out. Ciel was confused. Yes, Ciel knew it to be true that the amount of time a person remained affected after looking at his cursed eye tended to be random. Some of the shortest times included a person who remained effected for one single day. While some of the longest times include a person whos been effected for seven years and counting. But never....never ever has Ciel encountered anyone in the world who saw Ciel's cursed eye and remained effected only for seconds. 'Seconds!' Ciel exclaimed within his own mind. His curse's current effect lasted on Tacere only for a matter of seconds before wearing off. And ontop of that Tacere had actually thought of Ciel's cursed eye as beautiful. Ciel was now seeing and thinking of Tacere in an entirely new and different way. He noticed Tacere's attempt at putting his hand through his hair and the feeble cover-up of fixing Ciel's hat. And when Ciel noticed this, he gasped ever so slightly, his cheeks gaining a brief pink tint of a blush. When Tacere said his name, Ciel's left eye focused on both of Tacere's eyes. But before Ciel could offer any form of response, Tacere's focus had shifted to Genis. Ciel frowned at the interruption. "What does that asshat want?" Ciel said. Though Ciel didnt seem to mind Tacere's protective gestures towards Ciel nearly as much as he would have earlier. "I'm glad that you remember me. Its nice to be remembered" Genis said to Tacere. Genis' hands were empty, and there were no signs of any hidden weapons under his somewhat-inappropriately-tight clothes. The only thing that was even slightly eye catching about Genis was that he wore a bookmark hanging from a string around his neck. "I'm here to help. Or at least i'd like to. You'll have to forgive me for being a tad of an eavesdroper, and hearing something about how some people are after you and how you considered going to Vendisa the pirate queen for help, but have no idea where she may be. The thing is I can lead you to her if you'd like" Genis said. Perhaps Ciel's pain really was subsiding. Or not. Unfortunately that just wasnt the case. Really this was an instance of the quiet before the storm. Ciel's curse was going to have its day, and many days to come if it had anything to say about it. Ciel lost track of the conversation between Tacere and Genis, due to a crow he noticed sitting in the middle of the market. It didnt seem like anyone else noticed the crow though....

Silence was the only thing that greeted the outburst of insults that Ciel rained upon Tacere, the daemon grimacing slightly as he forced himself to stay calm. 'He's in pain. Pain makes people do things.' He thought to himself, brow furrowing slightly in concentration. He himself had never felt 'pain'. Not from the blazing sun, nor from the stinging sands, not from hunger, nor from wounds. He could feel them. But what was pain? Face not betraying his thoughts, the daemon pushed aside the philosophy for later. After he had cleaned up Ciel's face, bit the inside of his own cheek to stop himself from paying attention to the little one's blush, the other boy had shown up. The meddlesome urchin with some other reborn-like powers.
As he half-glared at Genis, in the back of his mind, the slim male still saw the shadow of that glowing eye, though it existed only as an image, with no angry feelings behind it. Perhaps the eons he had spent in the other world, and the centuries that he had passed in this one gave him the self control. Perhaps it just wasn't as provoking. He knew not. The eye itself was beautiful, it gleamed with a darkness that was almost hypnotic, dancing and pulsing shadows swirling in its depths, there was this cold blaze that seemed to burn perpetually in it, and Tacere struggled to remove the image from his mind, succeeding after a few moments. Looking down at the young welp, he half smirked, the shadow where his mouth should be seemed to darken, but his eyes burned with an icy gleam. "Well phrased. I'm wondering that as well." Asshat indeed. This little worm had no business greeting Ciel as if he were a comrade.
He said nothing at the comment about being remembered. It may be nice to be remembered, but it was far more convenient, not to mention safer, to go unremembered and unseen. His hand slid from its spot atop Ciel's head down onto the boy's shoulder, a little more protective. A shadow seemed to flicker as the man flicked an eyebrow up at the garish garments that the other wore, they were entirely too tight on the chest and thighs, useless for running fast or for long distances. Upon hearing the rather incredible claim of the small lad before him, Tacere gently tapped Ciel's shoulder with his ring finger, not moving his gaze from Genis's. "What evidence have you to prove this claim? And what would you want in return." He shifted his weight smoothly from one leg to even it out. "There is no such thing as good will. There is business, or stupidity. Usually both come with a price."
The orbs that were his eyes glowed darkly beneath the shadows, and he knelt to whisper into Ciel's ear, still eyeing Genis, "You should choose. Do we go with him?" Upon kneeling, his gaze followed Ciel's own slowly, and he noticed the crow, oddly unperturbed by the loud noise and people weaving around. It was unnatural, and the ash daemon forced himself not to stare, as it might incur the crow's suspicion, a thought that for some reason unnerved him. He glanced down at Ciel, then back at Genis, waiting for his companion to respond.

(( No biggie ^_^. And dont fret, your posts never disapoint, they just make me think, lol. hmm, maybe i think too much, maybe i should just think less, put on some music and type more, then i'd actually be able to post more often, sigh ^_^ ))
:: Flashback :: years earlier "Hey parental units, I'm home from the Academy. They gave us a week off for the holidays" Genis said as he walked through the front door of his parents abode. Genis didnt recieve any answer. Infact the entire house was wrapped in silence. "Wow dont get all excited at once" Genis said as he wondered from room to room. Then Genis walked into the living room. "Mom? Pops?!" Genis called out as his eyes widened in horror. Both of his parents were keeled over on the floor, with swords through their chests, in puddles of their own blood. Two men in black robes stood at the opposite end of the room from Genis. "Ah, their progeny has arrived, and exactly on time, too. I do so appreciate punctuality" the one in black robes called Digamma said. "Who are you? What have you done?" Genis asked these questions quietly, not because he was calm, because he was in shock. "I do so abhor stupidity. You know well enough that your parents were members of the assassins guild. Just as we are. Afterall your parents kept nothing from you, despite the guilds wishes. So anyway, it stands to reason that you also know that the guild doesnt appreciate failure, as well as what the guild does about failure" Digamma said. "My parents committed seppuku.....with no regard for me..." Genis said as a single tear slid down his cheek. "And we are simply here as witnesses to see that the sentence was carried out" the other guy in black robes said. "How did you know I'd be showing up?" Genis asked. "Stupid boy. Dont you know by now that the assassins guild has eyes everywhere and its hand in everything. For example: We know Headmistress Cecilia is extremely selective in who she admits into her Academy. We know she admitted you for three reasons. One of which is a rather uncommon ability you have. Display that ability to us right now" Digamma said. "I dont know what you're talking about" Genis replied. "If that's the truth than you're simply a loose end. I do so despise loose ends" Digamma said as he turned to the other guy in black robes. "Kill the boy without mercy" Digamma ordered. At which point the other fellow in black robes drew his sword and charged at Genis. "Nooo!" Genis shouted as he closed his eyes. :: End of Flashback ::
Ciel starred at the crow in the middle of the market almost entranced by it. Until the crow looked back. Until the crow opened its beak and blasted a fireball him. Ciel's body jolted as he blinked and raised his arms protectively infront of his face. "Are you alright?" Genis asked. Ciel opened his eyes to find that there was no evidence of a crow or a fireball ever being there in the first place. "I'm...fine, i'm fine. Dont act like your friggen concerned" Ciel replied as he stood on his feet now. "Is there something wrong with your eye?" Genis asked. Ciel briefly placed his hand over his eyepatch, "I said i was fucking fine already. What the fuck are you still doing here. Tacere asked you a motherfuckin question. Either answer it now or get the fuck out of my sight you cocksucking piece of shit" Ciel replied annoyed. When he had asked about Ciel's eye, Genis hadnt been talking about the one under the eyepatch. Genis had been reffering to Ciel's normally azure left eye, which had just briefly flickered from azure to crimson and back again. But Genis didnt bother to correct Ciel's wrong assumption.
While Ciel waiting for any notion of a responce from Genis, he pondered why Tacere whispered in his ear that it was his decision. Why would anyone leave anything entirely in another persons hands? Was this what people called trust? Genis fiddled with the bookmark hanging from his neck a bit before answering. "Remember where you are. Kritt's docks are notorious for the amount of pirate vessals that come and go from here. All pirates, whether directly or indirectly, are ultimately in the service of Pirate Queen Vendisa. Some of which are bound to know where Vendisa are. Even less of which are on their way to seeing her for one reason or another." Genis said. "Dont tell me you're a pirate" Ciel said. "No, but i was eavesdropping on some. Which is something i tend to do. Which is something i already openly admitted to you two. Proof of that is how I knew details of your conversation that I shouldnt of. And apparently i was able to eavesdrop on you two without even Tacere noticing, so in light of that, what makes you think i'm not capable of eavesdropping on some pirates" Genis replied. "What makes you think anything any pirate says is remotely true?" Ciel asked. Genis shrugged. "Go fuck yourself and leave" Ciel replied. "Oh well. Guess that shows me for trying to be an optimist." Genis said as he started to walk away. "Guess that stuff they were saying about Xion wasnt true either" Genis said.
Ciel's eye widened. "What did you just say?" Ciel asked. Genis kept going without a word. Ciel ran up to Genis, got infront of him, and grabbed Genis by the collar of his tight shirt. "What the fuck did they say about my twin sister?!" Ciel demanded to know. Genis smilled the tinniest smile in the corner of his lip. "Oh just a rumor" Genis replied, apparently not minding the close proximity to Ciel. "Tell me!" Ciel shouted as he shook Genis. "Something about Xion killing a pirate captain and stealing his ship. Something about Xion sailing on a direct course for Umi" Genis paused and glanced briefly at Tacere. Almost as if Genis knew that Tacere and Umi had met. "Something about a task force of pirates possibly intercepting Xion. Oh, and something about Vendisa herself being on her way there to Rectify that entire Xion situation" Genis said. Ciel glared at Genis as he said, "Rectify? what the fuck is that suppose to mean?" "What do you think it means" Genis replied insidiously. Ciel shoved Genis away. "Still have no interest in going to Vendisa?" Genis said. "Shut it. Shut the fuck up!" Ciel shouted as he started pacing back and forth. Ciel was thinking: if there was anyone in all of Rea that could help Ciel deal with these mysterious people in black robes that were after him, Vendisa would be that person. But Vendisa was, at least according to the impression that Genis was giving, currently after Xion. He wondered if getting Vendisa to help him would distract Vendisa and get her attention off of Xion. He also considered confronting Xion, though he doubted that would go well. Ciel also pondered confronting Umi. What if the answer wasnt Vendisa or Xion. Whether Umi was aware of it or not, she had the ear of both Vendisa and Xion like no other on Rea. Ciel sighed in annoyance. There was too much to consider. Than again, Ciel considered all three of them, Vendisa/Xion/Umi, to be nothing but meddlesome forces of constant trouble in his life. Even if one of them could help Ciel's own current situation, perhaps it was best to seek aid elsewhere and entirely avoid whatever complicated mess those three were in the midst of. Ciel stopped pacing and looked over at Genis. "You know what smart ass, it turns out I still have no interest in going after Vendisa" Ciel replied. "Whats that, a fire?" Genis asked. Ciel looked in the direction that Genis was looking to see smoke rising into the sky. "Thats comming from the direction of the tavern!" Ciel said, as he ran off towards the tavern, thinking only of the old man.
:: Flashback :: the immidiate past A man in black robes walked up behind Genis, as the later finished inspecting the corpses of two others in black robes. "Did Tacere kill them?" Digamma asked. Genis nearly jumped out of his skin. "Damn it, you could make some noise or, oh i dont know, perhaps announce yourself to your coworkers for once. Nearly gave me a heart attack" Genis said. "You do realize that, as an assassin, being able to approach unnoticed is apart of my schtick right. sigh" Digamma said. "Whatever. And to answer your question, no he didnt. He messed up their heads really bad. I'm the one that killed them just a few minutes ago, ya know since they failed and all" Genis said. "I do so appreciate your efficientcy" Digamma replied as he assisted Genis in throwing the two corpses off the docks and into the sea. "So how badly did they fail. Some manner of statis report would be appreciated" Digamma said. "Tacere is alive, he still has his powers, he took one of our devices, and he fled the scene with Ciel. They managed to use the device on Ciel, but only a 90% containment was achieved, which is frankly bizarre. I suspect it has something to do with Ciel's curse, maybe just the white magic was taken" Genis said. "Hmmm, this will require a change of strategy..... Or perhaps this is an oppurtunity to merge a few of the guilds plans together" Digamma said as he tapped his lip. "Would you mind not being so vague" Genis said. "I'll inform you on how to proceed shortly, but first there's a loose end to wrap up" Digamma said as he glanced at the tavern. :: End of Flashback ::
Ciel ran as fast as he could, only to find the smuldering and charred remains of the tavern. "No" Ciel said in disbelief. When Genis caught up, he saw Ciel rummugging through the remains of the debris. It wasnt just the tavern that was lost, but the second floor apartment that Ciel and Xion had been allowed to live in as well. The few basic and very few prescious possessions that Ciel or Xion owned was nothing but ashes now. Then Ciel found what he had been looking for. And what he had been hoping he would never find. It seemed like Ciel's whole life was being taken away, and every single time he thought he was down to nothing, the world proved him wrong and took away even more. What Ciel now found was the burned corpse of the old man. Ciel went to touch the corpse, but it cruelly turned to ashes in his hands.
Then something hit the ground next to Ciel. He picked it up to find that it was a box of matches. On the one side of the box it said "I did it." Ciel suddenly looked upwards to find a man in black robes standing on the roof of the building nextdoor, aka Digamma. "Why!!!" Ciel shouted. "Shh" Digamma briefly placed a finger over both his lips, and then said "There's more on the other side." Ciel looked down at the match box and flipped it around. On the other side there was more writing, which said, "Xion is next. Then your cousin. And lastly you, only when you have suffered just enough" Ciel looked up towards Digamma. "Motherfucker!!!!" Ciel cried out enraged as he threw the box of matches towards Digamma. The matches fell short, and Digamma leaped off the rooftop over the docks and landed in a boat. A boat filled with pirates that for some reason were taking their orders from a fellow in black robes. A boat that started sailing away. At the same time, a crowd of people from the docks, from the markets, some ordinary citizens of Kritt, some pirates, all of which were armed with weapons and looked angry, the whole crowd had surrounded where Ciel and Genis were.
