A bright ball of blue light streaked across the sky, followed closely behind by a ball of pale red. The tails of the comet-like orbs left lingering contrails that faded into the background of a star-strewn sky.
“What is it, Raati? Another Ascension?” Raati turned to Lurea.
“Yeah. I guess more children have come.” He turned back to the horizon where the balls of light faded into the distance, falling toward the planet’s surface. “Should we go to greet them, or do you think the Snatchers will be there?”
Lurea tilted her head up at the stars, scrunching her features as if trying to read something blurred and small. A black mark in the shape of a perfectly filled circle seemed to fade into existence on her forehead and her violet irises glowed a strange green. After a moment both faded away. She looked to Raati, her expression hard.
“The children will have already been taken. However, it may not be too late. “ She faced the direction they descended and pointed. “We can overtake them to the West at the canyon. We can intercept the children, possibly before they awaken.”
Raati nodded and touched the open ended black circle around his navel. When he’d awoken he had been covered with markings, like tattoos, over various parts of his body, but the one marking that he knew was different was this open circle. This was the sign of the awakened ones--the Reborn.
As the two moved into action to pack up camp and set out, Raati stole a glance at Lurea while he pulled on a loose, tattered shirt. His circle, the proof of his power and birthright, never faded. It never disappeared. Lurea’s however.. He often wondered why hers only appeared when she used her strange power. Why was hers more like a filled circle while his was a broken line in the shape of one?
He shook his head to clear the thoughts away and kicked dirt onto the dying embers of their campfire. It didn’t matter. He and Lurea had awakened together. They’d Acended to the same place and had bonded that night. It didn’t matter how they got here or where they came from, he trusted her; that’s all that mattered now.

They approached the canyon from the South. The Snatchers would be coming through the Northern Pass, so Raati and Lurea had the element of surprise on their side. Not to mention the power of Foresight, Raati thought wryly as they climbed the rocky terrain to take a higher vantage point.
It had taken three days to get to the canyon and the pair had barely taken any time to rest. Time was not on their side and the distance was miserable, but they had made it. Now they climbed the canyon walls, the night deep around them. Both of them were exhausted, but Lurea insisted they keep moving. When they did rest it was in the cover of darkness or shadows. Lurea would turn her head to the sky and use her power to ascertain their direction and the likelihood of their success. There were times when she would furrow her brow, her face becoming a darkened mask and times when her expression would soften and her body relax. He wondered what it must be like to see through her eyes.
Finally crowning the top of the ridge they found the terrain, as predicted, was as flat as a plateau in the place they’d come up. There were rocky outcrops up ahead, but for now they could navigate quickly. Once the sun was up they could hide in the shadows of the outcrops to rest until the caravan passed through. At that time, according to what Lurea had Seen, there would be a slope where they could slide down quickly and overtake them.
